All partner interactions and subjects are structured, predictable, and controlled. We do not use "free-sparring" as a form of practice. Toguchi Kaicho (originator of Shoreikan) believed strongly that free sparring was detrimental to learning proper technique and attitude for true karate development. Why learn a traditional
Okinawan martial art?
There are plenty of martial arts schools and options available in our communities. Why is Shorei Kan Goju Ryu traditional Okinawan Karate a beneficial thing to learn? Purpose. The purpose of traditional Okinawan martial arts is to improve both the individual and interactions between individuals, i.e., how we treat each other; ultimately leading to the betterment of society. While fighting and the ability to protect oneself are the primary functions of all martial arts, Okinawan karate has this self-defence focus but also looks to make communities better places to live; politeness and respect (Shorei) are fundamental keys to this function. At Shorei Kan Langley we also emphasize practicing kindness in our day-to-day lives. We have authentic and direct roots to Okinawan originators (there were several); in particular, Chojun Miyagi who was the originator of goju (hard-soft) karate and Seikichi Toguchi, who is the father of Shorei Kan.

Self DefenceAt the root of all martial arts is learning how to defend oneself should the need arise. The goal is to train through repetition, various movements so they become ingrained in the body's muscle memory. The mind can become "open" and more aware rather than be stressed by the circumstances. When trained over time the movements become reflexive and can be applied when needed.

Appropriate fitnessIn the course of training we utilize a wide range of movements and exercises to improve: strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, coordination, agility, etc. While some individuals are very fit and others may experience physical challenges, each person can participate in the classes and exercises as it suits their level and ability. Hence, it is suitable for all ages, physical statures, fitness levels, etc.
